SiFu Keith Monk – A Passion for Martial Arts and Teaching

SiFu Keith Monk’s martial arts journey began at the age of seven when he first studied Kyokushinkai Karate under Steve Arneil and Felix Ntumazah. While he enjoyed martial arts, he soon realised that Karate wasn’t the right fit for him. Over the years, he explored Jujitsu and Jeet Kune Do, but it wasn’t until he discovered Wing Chun Kung Fu under his instructor SiFu Alan Paterson in 2008 that he truly found his passion. From that moment on, he never looked back.

A Commitment to Wing Chun Excellence

Wing Chun captivated SiFu Keith in a way that no other martial art had before. He trained intensely, attending classes multiple times a week and participating in every seminar he could. As he progressed through the grading system, his dedication led him to join the Instructor Training Course under SiFu Alan Paterson, where he developed his teaching skills. It was during this time that he realised his true calling—to become a full-time martial arts instructor.

SiFu Keith began his teaching journey at Schools of Kung Fu Croydon, training directly under SiFu Alan Paterson. His drive and ambition soon led him to open his own school in Sutton in 2010. Under his leadership, the school quickly grew into one of the most successful martial arts schools in the UK, becoming an established black belt school for both children and adults.

A Growing Legacy

SiFu Keith’s hard work and commitment have been recognised multiple times. In 2015, his school was awarded the ‘Franchisee of the Year Award’ by Nest, and in 2016, the school moved to a larger, full-time location to accommodate its expanding student base. Today, Schools of Kung Fu Sutton boasts a team of full-time and part-time instructors who work alongside SiFu Keith to help students achieve their goals in Wing Chun Kung Fu.

Training and Influences

SiFu Keith’s Kung Fu journey has been shaped by some of the most respected figures in Wing Chun, including his instructor SiFu Alan Paterson and SiFu Sergio Iadarola, the Chief Instructor of the IWKA and Executive Chief Instructor of Schools of Kung Fu.

  • 1st Technician Grade (Black Belt) – 2011
  • 2nd Technician Grade – 2014
  • Awarded the SiFu title by SiFu Alan Paterson – 2015
  • 3rd Technician Grade – 2017
  • 4th Technician Grade – 2022

He remains a private student of SiFu Alan Paterson, continuously refining his techniques and deepening his understanding of Wing Chun. He has trained in China through the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine at London South Bank University, exploring the roots of martial arts while visiting historic sites such as the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. Additionally, he has travelled to Maderia to train with SiFu Sergio, focusing on the internal aspects of Wing Chun.

SiFu Keith has attended numerous seminars and instructor training sessions with SiFu Alan Paterson, SiFu Kul Rai, and SiFu Sergio. He is also a key assistant instructor for the Technician (Black Belt) test team, helping to prepare students for one of the most challenging milestones in their martial arts journey.

Serving the Community

Beyond teaching Wing Chun, SiFu Keith is deeply involved in giving back to the community. He has provided Wing Chun workshops and self-defence classes in primary and secondary schools across Sutton, including:

  • Greenshaw High School
  • Overton Grange
  • Stanley Park
  • Carshalton Girls & Boys
  • Foresters Primary School

He and his team have also organised demonstrations at local events, school assemblies, and summer fetes, inspiring children and young adults to explore martial arts.

A strong advocate against bullying, SiFu Keith has implemented anti-bullying initiatives within his school, dedicating class time to discussions and awareness, particularly during Anti-Bullying Week. He has also supported numerous charities, including:

  • Cancer Research UK (with the Peter Andre Foundation)
  • Demelza Hospice Care for Children

Expanding the Schools of Kung Fu Family

With the same passion and dedication that led him to build one of the UK’s top martial arts schools, SiFu Keith is committed to expanding the Schools of Kung Fu family and sharing the incredible benefits of Wing Chun Kung Fu with even more students.

His latest venture sees him supporting Schools of Kung Fu Epsom, helping to establish a strong foundation and guiding students on their own martial arts journey.
